Parkour: Potentially One Of The Safest Sport Around

You know, whenever I tell people or we tell people about what we do for fun (eg. flipping around and... well, jumping off buildings). People's first reaction would generally be.. "Oh WOW!! But isn't that dangerous?" LOL..

As a matter of fact, Parkour can potentially be one of the most safest sports around to practice. However, if practiced recklessly and incorrectly, potential danger is high... Plus, there has been very few reports of serious injuries due to Parkour and all traceurs are exceptionally healthy for top level athletes.

Here are a few things to remember when you are practicing, regardless of your level:
(And if you're too lazy to read, just scroll to the Summary)

1. Progressive Training is Key: Walk First, Then Run!
These days people only upload videos on youtube to show really advance moves. The thing is, as a beginner, Just Admire these moves as a start. Always start from basic and slowly develop your mind and physical self. There are no shortcuts to Parkour, it takes years of training to get where people like David Belle and Damien Walters are now. So take it slow.

2. Two Brains Are Better Than One
When attempting to Parkour, regardless whether you're doing basics or intermediate, always have someone who has done Parkour for at least 2 - 3 months CONSISTENTLY every week. They key word here is CONSISTENTLY. It's always better to get a second opinion before trying out something new in the urban jungle. You know, to analyze the situation, and to see if it's really feasible. I prefer to have at least 2 others (that means a total of 3 of us) around when I try something new.

3. Dressing Can Bring The Best, and The Worst Of You.
Yes, dressing up, or rather suiting up for Parkour is essential at the beginning. Always wear something light and that doesn't restrict your movement (eg. jeans and jackets are not advisable) Of course, one might say a traceur should be able to Parkour in anything they wear, but that can come later. Again, Progressive Training Is Key, start of with light stuff and with shoes, and later on once your basics and foundation are right, you can try in other outfits like a business suit with blazer and all that. Some even train barefooted for the challenge.

4. Plan Before You Leap
Parkour is an individual sport. The difference with other sports like soccer and basketball is you're interacting with inanimate objects. Which means you can predict what might happen. (Unless you've reach the level where u do moving cars) Soccer and basketball involves other players which makes it harder for you to predict what might happen and cause more serious injury. So plan before your leap, there's always a safer way around the obstacles you're facing.

5. Parkour After You've Completely Healed.
And in the case where you really got injured. Only start practicing again once you've completely healed. This is to prevent overusing your injured part and causing more injury to it than it already is. Further more, when you practice while you're still injured, you tend to avoid using the injured area more to avoid pain. This will form bad habits which you will find hard to correct later. So take it slow, and be patient. Parkour is not an over night thing. It takes years of conditioning.

IN SUMMARY:
1. Progressive Training is Key: Walk First, Then Run!
  • Always start with BASICS.
  • Higher level movements require Stronger Physical Strength and Skill
  • So only admire Advance Moves as a beginner
2. Two Brains Are Better Than One
  • Always train in pairs (I prefer a group of 3)
  • It is preferable for your partner to have done Parkour CONSISTENTLY for 2 -3 months
  • This is for analyzing the situation/obstacle, and whether you should do it.
3. Dressing Can Bring The Best, and The Worst Of You.
  • As a beginner, start of with light, unrestrictive clothing and proper shoes
  • After mastering the techniques, then you can start trying with other outfits (eg. business suit, some even try barefooted)
4. Plan Before You Leap
  • Parkour is an individual sport
  • You are interacting with inanimate objects.
  • Crashing into it means you didn't plan or trace. (means its really your fault)
  • So plan first before you do anything (or we like to say TRACE)
5. Parkour After You've Completely Healed.
  • Only begin practice after your injury is healed.
  • Prevent overusing the injured part to cause further damage
  • And prevent bad habits from forming because your body automatically avoids from using that area.

Parking Training : Jumping height training (Part 1)

IMPORTANT: Please do this training with shoes or on a soft ground!

Note: Please do a set of warm up before beginning this training.

1/4 Leap Ups


1. To start with, bent down ¼ as shown in the picture, and put your hands in front of your torso.

2. Then launch yourself up to a height of at least 8~10 inches (20~25cm). If this height is too comfortable for you, try 10~12 inches (25~30cm). While in air, your arms should be placed straight on the sides of your body.

3. When you land, you have completed ONE CYCLE of this training.

4. The recommended CYCLES to do in one session is 3~5.


Calf Raises

You will need a thick book or stairs, or and lifted platform (NOT TOO HIGH) for this training.

1. Stand as shown in the picture; make sure your heel is LOWER than the platform. Making it to support your entire body weight.

2. Now bring up your heel AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE.

3. Then bring your heel down to the original position at step 1. This makes ONE CYCLE.

4. Switch legs when you have completed ONE CYCLE.

5. Recommended CYCLES to do in one session is 2~4.

10ft Precision Jump. Possible???

Hey people!!

I've been searching online about long jumps. As in how far can an average human jump horizontally. In our case, how far a ledge can we jump if the ledges were parallel in height. LOL. There were many answers, some say 3ft, some say 8ft for guys, 7ft for girls. But I found a website that is pretty comprehensive that i'll like to share with everyone.

Apparently, for a normal Adult Male (non athlete) Jumping >3.0m(9.84ft) and for a normal Adult Female (non athlete) Jumping >2.8m(9.18ft) is considered excellent.
Normal adult males and normal adult females who jumps 2.5m(8ft) & 2.2m(7ft) respectively are considered average.

Athletes on the other hand, are expected to fly to a distance of 3.75m(12.3ft) for male and 3.15m(10.33ft) for females to be in the 91st percentile.

The good news is with small little techniques we have in Parkour, we can jump 12ft easily. LOL! NO kidding. We've tested it and tried it out. It's tiring, but it's possible. You just have to break free and free your mind HAHA!

ps: the longest jump is currently at 8.83m(29ft). CRAZY!!!!

Do the Shimmy

Hey guys. Apparently it's pretty easy to train for Shimmy. We've tested it and it works. HAHA. Here's what you do for all you people who wanna nail that shimmy.

Now shimmy is more or less all about how strong your fingers are. So you don't exactly need arms strength or upper body strength. The most important part are your fingers. Therefore, all you have to get are those hand trainers and use them daily for 15 times, 3 sets. So all together 45 times. But of course, get the 20kg Hand trainers. Not the 5kg. If you can get heavier, all the better.

And by a week, you'll be able to do the shimmy Check it out!!!

Hey Everybody!!

LOL!! It's been awhile since we updated this blog. Sorry. LOL
Anyhow, everyone's been busy with all their stuff and studies. So chill alright if you can't make it. Just know that if you don't come you miss out on some awesome stuff LOL

Anyway, most of our moves are now focused in the Intermediate levels. So not much basic no more. We do go back sometimes o refresh but seldom. Only newbies will go through those stuff. So if you're interested in Palm Spins, reverse vaults, turn vaults, kong, dash, kash. Well do join us!! Or you'll miss it!

We'd be putting up posters soon. So look out for them around HELP corridors and everywhere. HAHAH gonna spam. Wanna start building our club up. We need trainers now so people like Faris, Nick, Adam. You guys more or less are trainers. Just waiting for you to take up the challenge. We need you guys. So yea. Do come.

Anyhow, as usual this week's training is up. So come by Paramount at 5pm to 7pm for some serious jam this week. See you all there!!

hey guys!! Awesome run Yesterday eh. MOst of you are fast learners. Reverse vault and the dive roll up the slope. AMAZING i was shocked.

Anyhow, there will be no session this sunday as it is father's day. And also since there's mid terms for some of us... SO have fun with your dad and study hard kay! Don't get lazy though..!!

HeyYOO!!

Alright PEOPLE!! We are looking to upgrading some of you peeps to Trainer Level. So we will have more Trainers for the new August Intake after Recruitment. So do brush up on your moves and who knows, you may be chosen to candidate as a Trainer. ;) (Trainers get some.. extra bonus stuff.. which we can't tell you yet since.. well, you're not one yet. LOLss I feel evil)

Parkour Examination Week

The person who successfully gets through will be ranked on the Parkour Official Website.. And may your greatness be known to all.

This won't be easy.

MEMBERSHIP FEE POLICY
Every member is to pay RM3/month as membership fee. This is to cover transport, admin fees, and also to save up to buy medical kit, nerf guns and other equipments.
Fees should be payed up by the second week of the month.

CLAIM POLICY
There will be a claim form for people who fetch others. Each person you carpool (roundtrip) you may claim RM1

EG. Jack carpools Jane and Harry. He is eligible for RM2 for that week.
Jack gets the claim form from Treasurer - Chuck and writes down his details and passes it back to Treasurer - Chuck
At the end of the month, Treasurer - Chuck will pay Jack his claim according to the claim form.

You may also claim for toll if you are fetching anyone, but you must have the receipt and an alibi.

hey guys!!

After a week of hard work for our exams, it's only fair if we all went for some tension releasing activity.. Like Parkour!!!

In Parkour we advocate running away if you can to save yourself, but of course dun apply this to your basic homework and exams.. It's always good to stay and fight if you can and if it doesn't mean risking your life and safety ;)

Anyway, this week will be at HELp University College Main block Carpark from 3 till 5pm. This week we're focusing on foundation!! So it is a must come !!

Dear members,

Parkour would be on holiday for the next two weeks as it is chinese new year, and the following week is mid terms.

For those of you who haven't been able to join us, don't you worry, we have a whole year ahead of us to do so. Just remember to keep your Sundays free at all times.

A small announcement, Mr Joel, Calculus Lecturer (and Engineering Math too i believe) in the HMC Department is our new official Lecturer Advisor and will be joining us once in a while! Let's give him a warm welcome guys!!

parkour's gonna be AWESOME

HEEEY HEEY HEEY!!

This week's gonna be a bomb!! Our very own president found this place called BB Gym and the place is awesome!! it's a huge big hall filled with cushion and everything, we can do our dive rolls (my obsession), flips, stunts without a fear of breaking anything!!

Guys, we hope to see you there. Transportation will be provided so don't worry.

We're meeting at HELP Uni at 2.00PM to go to Bukit Jalil and backa gain at 5.00PM. Have dinner together, and off to the gym at 6.30PM to have our second round of training till 8.30PM. We should be back at HELP at 9.00PM

For those whoa re coming first time, wear something light with sport shoes. Long pant are recommended unless you dun mind getting ur knee scraped. If you have gloves bring em or if you don't, it doesnt really matter. LOL we all have nice hands after Parkour ;)

We're BACK!!!

Parkour is back online this year and we're ready to start!!!

This is a REFRESHER COURSE that must be attended by all MEMBERS. It will be held on

VENUE: HELP Uni Carpark (Where it all started.... memories..)
TIME : 3.00PM - 5.00PM

Dress code as usual, light and free..
Trust me, you would want to be light and free. Wearing winter coats and jeans to Parkour in negative conditions with thick snow is hard. LOL!!
